A Clinical Study of the 251 Cases of Inguinal Hernia


Abstract
This study is a clinical analysis of 251 cases of inguinal hernia, who were treated at the department of surgery, Seoul City Dongbu Hospital during the past 6 years from January 1977 to December 1982.
The result were as follows.
1) The incidence of the inguinal hernia was about 4.7% of the total patients admitted to the department of surgery.
2) Male was predominated over female by the ratio of 9 : 1.
3) The sites were 196 cases(78,1%) in the right, 48 cases(19.1%) in the left and 7 cases (2.8%) bilaterally.
4) Indirect inguinal hernia is the most frequent type among the inguinal hernia, consisting of 96.8%.
5) The chief complaints were inguinal mass in 179 cases and scrotal swelling in 72 cases.
6) The incaceration is 12 cases(4.8%), strangulation is 5 cases(2.0%) and 14 cases(5.6%) of all patient had hydrocele.
7) 117 cases(46.5%) of all hernia were repaired by Bassini method, 56 cases(22.4%) by McVay, 52 cases (20.8%) by high ligation, 23 cases(9.1%) by Ferguson and 3 cases(1.2%) by Halsted.
8) The mean postoperative hospitalization day was 6.7 days.
9) One cases(0.4%) were readmitted for reoperation because of recurrence.
10) The incidence of postoperative complication was 14.3% and the mortality was 0.4%.
